Q&A

As an Open Campus Student, what student benefits do I receive?
In addition to the privilege of taking courses, Open Campus students receive a computer e-mail account, full library access, and are eligible to enroll and pay for a Blue Cross insurance plan through the university. Open Campus students who have a full time (12 units) program may work on campus. UCD Extension is responsible for helping you access these services (530-757-8777). More information: http://universityextension.ucdavis.edu/opencampus

How can I balance this with my work schedule?
This program is specifically intended to offer flexibility. In this way, we aim to make this program accessible to a wide variety of people who might be balancing it with other responsibilities. After meeting with a faculty advisor, you may take as few or as many courses per quarter as you like. However, because the courses needed for this post-baccalaureate program are regular UCD courses, most of them are offered during regular work hours. Undergraduate courses (# 1 - 198) tend to be offered on Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedules for an hour each or on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule for an hour and a half each. Graduate courses (#200+) tend to meet once a week for three hours. There is a requirement of 12 units of formal coursework that translates into 3 four-unit courses. The required WMS 182 course is offered once per academic year. If it is not offered, you may consult with your faculty advisor and/or GGI staff to find an alternate class.  If you have no previous background in Women and Gender Studies, WMS 50 will be needed.  This course has an additional one hour discussion section.  In total, eighteen units are needed to complete the certificate. To view a schedule of classes go to http://registrar.ucdavis.edu

Will I be guaranteed enrollment in the classes I choose?
No, enrollment is not guaranteed. Because one of the stipulations of UCD Extension, Open Campus is that no regularly enrolled student will be denied admission to a course because of an Open Campus student, you cannot begin to register until the first day of instruction. You will need to introduce yourself to the instructor to get a signature and you will also need a signature from the chair of the department through which the course is being offered. Please do not hesitate to ask GGI staff for help.

What are the Application Deadlines?
Applications should be submitted no later than 6 weeks prior to the start of the quarter in which you plan to begin enrollment. Check the Academic Calendar for exact dates. If you are applying as an international student and need a visa prior to enrollment, we recommend applying 2-3 months in advance in order to ensure that all visa applications can be filed in time for the beginning of the quarter.

* See http://siss.ucdavis.edu/There will be additional fees associated with getting a visa which will vary by country.

Is Financial Aid Available?
Yes, limited financial aid is available to qualified students in the form of personal continuing  education loans. Students in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program are not eligible for state or federally funded grants and loans.  Continuing education loans are available from many sources. Direct questions on personal continuing education loans, educational tax credits and payment plans to the UC Davis Extension office at 530-757-8877. For more information, see: http://extension.ucdavis.edu/student_services/resources/loan_info.asp

Can International Students Work While in the U.S.?
As an International Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Student/ Visiting Scholar, you will be eligible for an F-1 or J-1 Visa. You may or may not qualify for a J-1 and you may not want this option because it may put you on a two-year restriction depending on your specialization and home country.  You will need to decide this with the staff at UCD Extension. However, “J-1 students maintaining a full-time course load and who are in good academic standing are permitted with written approval of the sponsor (the issuer of the DS-2019) to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during vacations.” http://siss.ucdavis.edu/J-1_students.htm

Gender and Global Issues cannot guarantee that you will find a job.  It is also important to remember that a full time schedule is 12 units and it may be difficult to balance job responsibilities with course requirements, in addition to the stress of transitioning to life in a new country.

How do I pay the $45 from outside the United States?
From outside the United States, you may use a wire transfer to pay the $45 application fee to the Regents of the University of California. Reference your name and that it is for the Gender and Global Issues Certificate Program Application through UCDE. More information at: http://cashier.ucdavis.edu/dept/wiretrans.cfm or e-mail cashier@ucdavis.edu
